Rafael Manriquez originally set this poem by Gabriel Mistral to an acapella melody in 6-8. I asked him to teach it to me, and one day he improvised the intro as a bolero. I loved it and asked his permission to write an arrangement of the whole song that way. When I was done, he critiqued it & liked it. We intended to record it for the album “Diamantes en la Grama”, but he died before we could record the track. This video is the only recorded version of the song in this arrangement. It’s not perfect, but I think it captures our intention very well.
